MIriam thorne



Miriam's early years of semi-rural surroundings in New Zealand fostered her love of art, music, dance and nature. Colours, forms, moods and movement constantly inspire her. As she developed artistically she came to believe that music-making is integral to her visual art.


Miriam graduated from Canterbury University College with a Fine Arts degree, majoring in painting, drawing and art history, followed by a Certificate in Art Education obtained from the Auckland Teacher Training College. In London, she expanded her cultural horizons studying at the Central School of Art and the Courtauld Institute while teaching Art in schools and travelling extensively. She moved to Ottawa with her husband Erik, started their family and was employed as a Guide Lecturer at the National Gallery. Relocating in Victoria she taught at Camosun College, UVic Extension and Glenlyon School and gained a Fine Arts degree in woodcut, etching, lithography and painting at UVic. Miriam's work is in private collections in Canada, USA, UK, France, Denmark, Australia and New Zealand. She has exhibited in BC (including the ArtSpring-Gallery on Salt Spring Island and the Saanich Peninsula Arts and Crafts Exhibition), Alberta,Saskatchewan, Ontario, New York Cit, Oregon (Color Pencil Society of America), in Christchurch, NZ 's Contemporary Arts Society Gallery and the Castillon Municipal Gallery in Nice, France.
